The Fifth Islamic Manuscript Conference

Access and Rights

24-26 July 2009, Christ's College, University of Cambridge

The Islamic Manuscript Association is pleased to announce that the Fifth Islamic Manuscript Conference will be held at Christ's College, University of Cambridge, UK from 24-26 July 2009. It will be hosted by the Thesaurus Islamicus Foundation and the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Centre of Islamic Studies, University of Cambridge.

The Fifth Islamic Manuscript Conference will specifically address the issue of access to manuscripts. Improving access to manuscripts through digitisation and electronic ordering and delivery systems whilst ensuring their proper long-term preservation is fundamental to the successful future study of the Islamic heritage. Presently, technologies are available that have the potential to transform the way manuscripts are studied; however, the access these technologies can allow is counterbalanced by collection holders' concerns regarding their legal rights and the financial sustainability of their organisations. During the Fifth Islamic Manuscript Conference these vital issues will be discussed by our invited speakers and selected paper presenters.

Registration fees are payable by all attendees and cover conference participation, conference materials, lunches, and morning and afternoon refreshments. The rates are £25/day (students and pensioners), £35/day (Association Members), or £45/day (non-members). A booking for all three days is priced at a discounted rate (£60/85/110). A three course dinner will be available each night from 23 to 26 July in Christ's Great Hall at a seperate rate of £36.

Single rooms with optional breakfast are available on-site at Christ’s College from 23 July until the morning of 27 July. These rooms may only be booked through the Association. The rate is £42 per person per night for a single room with shared facilities and £53 per person per night for an en-suite single room. Unfortunately the College only offers extremely limited numbers of twin rooms so if you are travelling with another please contact Jenny Wright (jenny@islamicmanuscript.org) to discuss alternative accommodation in Cambridge.
