a) My interest in manuscripts in Eastern Europe includes those of the Library of Rare books, Department of Rareties,The Latvian National Library, (Latvijas Nacionala Biblioteka, Riga), 6/8 Jekaba Iela. The librarian is Inara Klekere who has personally allowed me to publish the text of a Tatar manuscript,No 28, A222S (Austrumtautu/ Oriental). I have this text at my home in toto.It is a Tatar manuscript similar to those being studied by Dr Zorina Kanapatskaya and Dr Nuriya Garaeva, both members of TIMA. It datse from around 1880-90 and was originally in St Petersburg. The other Oriental manuscripts amounting to less than a dozen that are currently housed in Riga include Arabic works and an Uyghur document. b) I am currently translating a selection of Arabic texts and manuscripts from sundry collections in the town of Ghadames, in Libya, assembled by my friend 'Abd al-Qadir b. al-Jabbar, some from his private collection, and others are from sundry collections in Ghadames. It is hoped to publish these documents with translations of a selected number in the future, either through the Society for Libyan Studies or the Fontes Committee of the British Academy. They relate to the history of the town, to leading Islamic scholars of the past, and one or two short histories which particularly relate to the accounts of the expeditions of 'Uqba b. Nafi' into North Africa and other documents that relate to commerce between Ghadames and West Africa.
